Junior rugby on the NSW Far North Coast will receive a boost this October when the Byron Bay Schools 7’s returns.

School students from all over the region will descend on Byron Bay on October 17 and 18 to both showcase and develop their rugby skills under the watchful eye of NSW Rugby Union development officers.

Secondary schools are invited to attend on Thursday 17 October, competing in both boys and girls competitions across Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 age divisions. Registration is now open.

On Friday 18 October, primary schools are invited to participate with mixed boys & girls teams in Under 10 and Under 12 aged competitions.

Byron Bay Rugby Union Club President Eddy Brown welcomed the junior festival, which takes place ahead of the traditional men’s and women’s competitions on Saturday and Sunday.

“We’re really excited to see the Byron Bay Junior 7s return in expanded format in 2019. This fantastic initiative means the best local junior talent will be on display, and a huge number of kids will get to participate in sevens rugby in a fun, festival atmosphere, just like the adults have done for the last 30 years.”

“With a record number of senior teams already registered for the weekend competition, the two-day junior event means this will easily be the biggest Byron Bay 7s festival ever.”

The schools event is a joint initiative between NSW Rugby Union and Byron Bay Rugby Club. NSW Rugby Union Development Officer for the Far North Coast region, Tom Davidson, is coordinating the event.

“Rugby Sevens has enjoyed immense growth in popularity since it was introduced into the Olympics in 2016. It is so popular at the grass roots level as it lowers the barrier to participation with only 7 players required per team, giving kids the opportunity to get outdoors and engaged in physical activity.”

“This event enables us to bring over 200 kids together to be active and improve their skills in the game.”

All schools from the local region and beyond are welcome to attend and each school may register multiple teams.

Entry is free for parents, carers and spectators to attend and support.

The event is proudly supported by NSW Rugby Union, Far North Coast Junior Rugby Union, Byron Bay Rugby Club and Baidam Solutions.
